The 3Com Switch 4005 is an ideal workgroup aggregator (Desktop PCs; core of a smaller network) due to its modularity and layer-3 capabilities. High performance, feature-rich switching supports both layer-2 and layer-3 capabilities, with comprehensive network management to support Enterprise requirements. The 3Com Switch 4005 provides modular flexibility, scaling from 8 to 96 Fast Ethernet ports and from 1 to 24 Gigabit Ethernet ports, so providing investment protection for future expansion. The support of 100Base-FX allows cost-effective aggregation of desktop clients on fiber for security or connectivity over distances up to 2 km. Multimedia (voice/video/data) is supported with layer 2 switching capabilities such as multiple priority queues per port and 802.1p based classification, virtual LANs, standards-based multicast filtering, and 4 groups of RMON. High performance layer 3 routing and switching in a robust, modular chassis make the 3Com Switch 4005 an excellent backbone solution for smaller networks. Each I/O module provides internal switching and routing, preventing bandwidth bottlenecks from slowing down your network. The Switch supports IP RIP (Routing Information Protocol) or OSPF (Open Shortest Path First), for unicast traffic, whilst optional DVMRP allows the switching of multicast traffic between VLANs. The architecture of the Switch 4005 provides the high availability and fault tolerance your network requires. The chassis architecture supports a passive backplane, redundant power supplies and all modules are hot swappable so your network is always up and running.
